Tags and search

Hashtags in any note, a page for each tag, and search across every word you've kept.

Hashtags

Write a hashtag anywhere in a note, like #cabin or #maine-2016, and the note has that tag. It works the same in a reply, a note mailed to your own address and a note written on the web. Tags live in the words of the note: edit the note to change them.

A tag is letters and numbers, with hyphens to join words, and it needs at least one letter. Capitals and accents don’t matter, so #Café and #cafe are one tag. A tag keeps up to 50 characters.

A page for each tag

A tag on a note, in the morning email or on a release’s page opens that tag’s page: every day with a note that has it, newest first.

Every tag you’ve used is listed on Search before you type anything, each with how many days have it, most used first. Tags on Archive goes there too.

Search is in the header, on every page of the app. Type a few words and it finds the notes that have all of them. Put words in quotes, like “first snow”, to find them together. Capitals and accents don’t matter, and a word finds longer words that hold it, so “can” finds “canoe” too.

Search looks in:

  • the words of every note, its tags included;
  • the names of the links in it;
  • a note’s own place;
  • what you said in a voice memo, if Write out what I say is on, and what’s in a photo, if Describe my photos is on. Photos, voice memos and PDFs has both.

Results come newest first. When many days match, you see the newest 100 days, and more words narrow it.

What you search for goes to Release Notes inside the request, never in a web address, and it’s never logged.

Upcoming has its own tags

A date in Upcoming can have one tag, to group it with others, but Upcoming’s tags stay apart from your notes’ tags, and search never looks in Upcoming. Writing a note from a tagged date starts it with that hashtag, and it joins your notes’ tags once the note is saved.
